At ClearScore, we show the information held by Experian, our partner credit bureau in South Africa.
If debt-related information on your report looks incorrect or out of date, the best first step is usually to contact the lender, creditor, or provider involved directly.
Paid or settled accounts still showing
Your credit report is updated once a month, so information can sometimes be up to 60 days out of date.
If you’ve paid off an account, settled a debt, or your payment history hasn’t updated after 60 days, contact the lender first and ask them to send the updated information to Experian. Once the lender has submitted the update, it can take 5–10 business days for Experian to update their records. The changes should then appear in your next credit report update.
If your information still hasn’t been updated after 60 days, you can raise a dispute with Experian through our Chat located on the right-hand side of this page.
Debt review still showing
There is no fixed retention period for debt review information, as this depends on your individual circumstances.
If you’d like to find out how much longer you’ll remain under debt review, you’ll need to contact your debt counsellor directly. If you believe debt review is incorrectly reflected on your credit report, you’ll need to contact the NCR (National Credit Regulator). You can contact the NCR on:
- 011 554 2600
- 0860 627 627
- complaints@ncr.org.za
Prescribed debt still showing
Debt may be considered prescribed if no payments have been made towards it, and no legal action has been taken against you for a period of 3 years. Most, but not all, debts prescribe after 3 years.
If you believe a prescribed debt is incorrectly showing on your credit report, you can raise a dispute with Experian through our Chat located on the right-hand side of this page.
